TomTom ONE 130 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator (Box Version) Tom-tom Gps – Deborah L. Wallace – Ohio
I like it fine. I would perfer the bigger screen, but it was a gift, so I will not complain. It has several helpful features, but does not always choose what I consider the best route.
Overall, It is a useful and a helpful tool.
We have had the TomTom 130 for almost a year now. We use the GPS every time we make a lengthy drive, though for most of those trips the path is well trodden and the GPS is more of a curiosity on the windshield. Still it is nice to see the destination mileage decrease and the estimated time of arrival change. So far there have only been two occasions where I have really put the TomTom to the test navigating in cities and it helped tremendously.
I bought our TomTom from an office supply store. I originally thought I was buying the TomTom 130S, but apparently the sales person brought up the box for the 130 instead and I paid for the 130. The primary difference between the 130 and the 130S is that with the 130 the street names are visible on the map, but your electronic tour guide will not announce the street names. You are limited to the voice guiding you to turn left, right, and so on. In the end I decided this was not much of a difference. Whether the voice tells me to make the next turn or to turn onto a particular named street is pretty much six of one, half dozen of another.
Contrary to some other reviews, the volume is fine. We have had no problem hearing the audio directions. The TomTom provides you with several different voices to choose from — in addition to others you can purchase and download through your computer. We settled on the British voice as the most pleasant of the selections. The maps are readable and good for getting you around. They are certainly not detailed DeLorme topographic maps, but even if they were you would not be able to read the detail on the screen.
We usually keep the TomTom plugged into the DC port. On one occasion the unit was not plugged in and it served us for about two hours and twenty minutes before we got a low battery warning. Be patient with the unit. If the TomTom has not been used or charged for several days it will need to be plugged in at least two minutes before you attempt to turn it on. I initially failed to realize this in not reading the owner’s manual. As such I thought the unit had gone bad when it would not turn on immediately. Much like a rechargeable shaver the GPS requires a minute or two of charge before you can turn it on. Additionally when first activated the TomTom may take a minute or two before receiving all of the satellite signals.
Overall for the money, the Tom Tom 130 is a good unit.
A couple things to keep in mind when using the unit: First is that in order for the unit to adhere to the windshield the glass has to be clean. Repeatedly affixing the Tom Tom to the same suction cup blemishes on the windshield will only cause the unit to bounce off the glass after a couple of minutes. It is not a bad idea to moisten the suction cup before tightening the suction cup bezel. The TomTom screen is very sensitive. You notice this right away if you are trying to make adjustments while the car is moving. One little errant bounce of your finger all too easily can re-center the map, add a waypoint, or otherwise change your destination. Finally, and I include this advice for all GPS owners, you have to use common sense when using the TomTom. If you are going to be traveling to or through an unfamiliar location, reconnoiter a map first — even a computer map. The TomTom recommended route might not be the best way. You have the ability to alter the TomTom route by several means.
Another thing to consider is that no matter how “guarantied” up-to-date the maps may claim to be you will still find two way roads that are now one way roads, recommended left turns that are actually right jug handle turns, and some other highway exit depictions that were probably correct five years ago, but are certainly different now. On the other hand I was impressed that TomTom map data often includes brand new housing development roads. No map is 100 percent accurate, and the TomTom is no exception.
Remember too that when you park your car you should remove the TomTom from its very visible location. As with all portable GPS units the TomTom is too easy for someone to pocket if he gains access to your car.
